Malta’s Digital Revolution: The New E-ID Wallet is Here for Expats

The way you carry your identity in Malta is officially changing. Following the 2026 rollout by Identità, the physical plastic residency card is no longer your only—or most important—document. The Maltese Digital Identity Wallet (E-ID Wallet) has arrived, and here is how it affects every foreign resident on the island.

What is the Malta Digital Identity Wallet?

Aligned with the European Union’s digital identity framework, Malta has launched a secure mobile application that allows you to store your e-Residency permit, driver’s license, and educational qualifications directly on your smartphone.

This isn’t just a “photo” of your ID; it is a legally binding, encrypted digital version that carries the same weight as the physical card.

Key Benefits for Foreign Residents

1. Instant Verification

Gone are the days of carrying your physical passport or ID card everywhere. Whether you are opening a bank account, renting a property, or verifying your age, you can now share your data instantly via a QR code.

2. Enhanced Security and Privacy

The Digital Wallet uses biometric authentication (Face ID or Fingerprint). Unlike a lost wallet, your digital ID cannot be used by anyone else. Furthermore, you can choose to share only what is necessary—for example, proving you are over 18 without revealing your full date of birth or home address.

3. Remote Government Services

With the integrated E-ID, you can sign official documents digitally and access government portals like Jobsplus or Taxation services without needing a physical card reader.

How to Get Your Digital ID in 2026

If you are a Third-Country National (TCN) or an EU digital nomad in Malta, follow these steps:

  • Step 1: Valid Residency. Ensure your physical e-Residency card is up to date.

  • Step 2: Download the App. Install the official “Identità Malta Wallet” from the App Store or Google Play.

  • Step 3: Biometric Sync. You will need to scan your physical card and perform a “liveness check” (selfie scan) to verify your identity.

  • Step 4: Activation. Once verified, your digital permit will be generated automatically.

Important Note: Do I Still Need My Physical Card?

Yes. For now, Identità still issues physical cards, especially for travel outside the Schengen area. However, for daily life within Malta, the Digital Wallet is becoming the primary standard. Starting in late 2026, many government offices will prioritize digital verification to reduce wait times.
